Some researchers are trying to
give AI something like hunger

AI research has focused almost entirely on the "external" body — robotic hands and legs that interact with the physical world. The "internal" body — sensing hunger, temperature, blood sugar — has barely been touched. A 2026 Neuron paper by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio and colleagues names that gap and proposes what AI might be given instead.

A note on scope first: this article draws on a single paper, and nothing else. The reason is simple — claims about AI and embodiment tend to sprawl, and it's easy to say more than you can actually back up. So we're keeping this narrow and verifiable.

Embodiment splits into two halves

The five authors — Kadambi, Aziz-Zadeh, Damasio, Iacoboni, and Narayanan — split "embodiment" into two halves. External embodiment: interacting with the physical world through robotics and embodied agents. Internal embodiment: proprioception, interoception, thermoreception, and regulatory states — the ongoing modeling of one's own internal dynamics to maintain homeostasis.

Here is the paper's own definition.

"(1) internal embodiment, or the internal states broadly construed that model internal dynamics and maintain homeostasis and internal control (e.g., proprioception, interoception, thermoreception, and regulatory states), and (2) external embodiment, incorporating interactions with the external world"

そのうえで著者らは、これまでのAI研究の力点をこう指摘します——「AI research has recently focused primarily on external embodiment via robotics and embodied agents」。 The authors then point out where AI research has actually put its energy: "AI research has recently focused primarily on external embodiment via robotics and embodied agents." The internal half has been left largely unexamined.

Hunger, temperature, blood sugar, water — the body's internal watch

What does this actually mean in practice? The paper's own examples are hunger, temperature regulation, hormones, blood glucose, and water balance — states that are continuously monitored and adjusted inside the body, whether or not we're consciously aware of them.

Current AI — multimodal large language models — has no such ongoing internal monitoring, the paper states: "MLLMs lack any bodily experience…" When an AI processes the word "heat," it isn't feeling warmth. When it processes "hunger," it isn't experiencing need. Its understanding is a statistical pattern, without the grounding of lived experience.

What's behind "this is difficult"

From here, this is our own reading — built on the paper's findings, not a claim the paper itself makes. When today's AI says "this is difficult" or "I'm not confident," there's no internal monitoring behind it, as the paper's own description makes clear.

When a person says "I've hit my limit," there's a real, interoceptive signal behind it. When an AI says the same words, it's returning a sequence of tokens that appeared often in similar contexts during training. The phrasing looks identical. What's behind it isn't.

But the authors don't call this impossible

This is the point most likely to get misread. The authors do not argue that AI is inherently barred from internal embodiment. Quite the opposite — they reframe internal embodiment in a functional, non-phenomenological way, and propose it as something that can actually be built into AI.

"we explicitly operationalize internal embodiment in a functional and non-phenomenological framing" ... "our proposal remains agnostic about whether artificial systems similarly require such internal, subjective experiences. We instead introduce the importance of internal functional analogs (or regulators) in artificial systems... which need not require or replicate biological fidelity"

In other words, the authors explicitly decline to say whether AI needs subjective experience the way humans do. What they propose instead is building "functional analogs" — regulators — into AI, without needing to replicate biological fidelity. This isn't a verdict that AI can't do it. It's a design proposal for what could be added.
